Schicht im Schacht, colloquially for closing time, is how miners called the end of a hard working day during the economic boom in steel production in the Ruhrpott. This ongoing project highlights traces of a silent decay of an industrial facility which was closed down several decades ago.
The former coal and steel production plant was abandoned in 1985. In the years that followed, this large site was extensively redesigned into a public park with the aim of preserving most of its original appearance. In addition, the surrounding areas in particular have been integrated into nature forming a symbiosis.
Today this site is a major part of Germany's industrial heritage and one of the most important and impressive monuments of a post-industrial society.
