Schicht im Schacht, colloquially for closing time, is how the end of a hard working day used to be called in the Ruhrpott during the economic boom in steel production. This ongoing project highlights traces of a silent decay of an industrial facility which was closed down several decades ago.
The former coal and steel production plant was abandoned in 1985. In the years that followed, this large site was extensively redesigned into a public park with the aim of preserving most of its original appearance. In addition, the surrounding areas in particular have been integrated into nature forming a symbiosis.
Today this area is one of the most important and impressive monuments of a post-industrial society.
